China News Last year’s Third Plenum, the Chinese government meeting that sets future economic policy, decided that chasing GDP should not be the overriding government target. Going forward, economic policy should be designed to help poor areas, and frail ecologies, in order to create long term sustainable growth.
A few days ago, Fujian province announced it would remove GDP targets from the local government assessment system in 34 counties. Working from incomplete data, this journalist has found at least 70 counties or cities which have cancelled GDP as an assessment criteria.
Since 2013, counties in the following provinces have removed or reduced the role of GDP as a target: Fujian, Shanxi, Ningxia, Hebei, Zhejiang and Shaanxi.
